🌱Heart Teaching Method #4

生徒を試してはいけない。準備させよう。

英会話のレッスンを見ていると、

ネイティブコーチが突然、
「なんのスポーツが好きですか？」という日本文を指さして、
🗣️”Say, it in English.”(「はい、英語で言ってみて」)

と、生徒を試すように質問している場面をよく見かけます。
他にも、

🗣️初めてみた絵本の英文を指さして、
“Please, read this sentence.”「この文読んでみて」

私は、この教え方はあまり効果的ではないと思っています。

ネイティブコーチの頭の中には、

「英会話を習っているんだから、このくらいは言えるでしょう。」

という考えがあるのかもしれません。

でも、日本人の多くは、

😟「間違えたくない。」

という気持ちを強く持っています。

十分な練習をしないまま一人で答えるよう求められると、多くの生徒は黙ってしまいます。

話せないのではありません。

🌱 安心して話せる準備ができていない のです。

だから私なら、まず全員で練習します。

✅ 先生の後に続いて言う。
✅ ペアで練習する。
✅ サンプルを見て話す。

そして、

🌟「できる！」

という感覚を持ってから、一人で話してもらいます。

すると、生徒は驚くほど自然に話し始めます。

英語には、

Practice makes perfect.

という有名なことわざがあります。

でも、日本人の英語教育では、私はこう言いたいです。

💚 Practice makes Japanese relieved.

練習は、日本人に安心感を与えます。

安心できるから話せる。

話せるから楽しい。

楽しいから、もっと話したくなる。

もちろん、生徒の性格やクラスの雰囲気によって進め方は変わります。

最初から積極的に話せる子もいます。

しかし、特に小学校高学年くらいの日本人の子どもたちは、「間違えたら恥ずかしい」という気持ちが強くなる時期です。

読む練習も、
会話の練習もしていない状態で、

「はい、読んで。」
「はい、話して。」

と言われても、すぐにはできません。

教師の仕事は、生徒を試すことではありません。

✨ 生徒が安心して話せる環境をつくること。

それが、本当の英会話レッスンのスタートだと私は考えています。

Don’t Test Students. Prepare Them.

When I observe English lessons, I often see native English coaches suddenly pointing to a Japanese sentence, such as,

「なんのスポーツが好きですか？」

and saying,

🗣️ “Say it in English.”

In other words, they are testing the student before giving them enough support.

I also often see teachers pointing to a sentence in a picture book the student is seeing for the first time and saying,

🗣️ “Please read this sentence.”

Personally, I don’t think this is an effective way to teach.

Perhaps the native coach is thinking,

“They’ve been learning English, so they should be able to say something like this..”

But many Japanese learners don’t think that way.

😟 They are afraid of making mistakes.

When students are asked to speak before they feel ready, many simply become silent.

It doesn’t mean they can’t speak.

🌱 It means they don’t feel safe enough to try.

That’s why I would begin with practice first.

✅ We repeat after the teacher.
✅ We practice with partners.
✅ We look at examples and then try.

Only after students feel,

🌟 “I can do it!”

do I ask them to speak on their own.

Then, students begin to speak much more naturally.

There is a famous English saying:

Practice makes perfect.

But for Japanese learners, I would say:

💚 Practice gives Japanese learners a sense of relief.

Practice gives Japanese learners a sense of relief.

When they feel relieved, they can speak.

When they can speak, learning becomes enjoyable.

And when learning is enjoyable, they naturally want to speak more.

Of course, every student is different, and every class has its own atmosphere.

Some students are happy to speak immediately.

However, many Japanese children—especially those in the upper elementary grades—become much more self-conscious about making mistakes.

They begin to worry about being embarrassed in front of their classmates.

So, if they are asked to read or speak without enough practice, they often become silent instead of trying.

Reading aloud…

Having conversations…

Speaking in front of others…

All of these become much easier when students have had enough opportunities to practice first.

Our job as teachers is not to test students.

✨ Our job is to create an environment where students feel safe to speak.

That is where real English learning begins.
